SIUYPCA Backstory

In April of 2006, I purchased a ’87 El Camino off of E-bay with the intention that my daughter and I could restore it together. My daughter Danielle, who was born in ’87, was excited because we planned a vacation to pick it up and drive it back together; seeing all the sights along the way. Before that could happen, she was killed in a automobile collision. I have, and always will be, an El Camino lover, but wasn’t sure if I still wanted the car until a friend asked me “What would Danielle have wanted?”

I decided to keep the El Camino, and continue on with the restoration project. In memory of my late daughter I wanted to get vanity plates with the nickname I had given her as a little girl. Weedhopper. I applied for plates with WEEDHPR; a shortened version of Danielle’s nickname. A week later I received a letter from an anonymous employee of the state saying that ‘WEEDHPR’ was inappropriate and offensive. In the letter I was told that I must make four other choices, and explain what each one meant.

After getting really pissed off, and thinking of some truly offensive and inappropriate ideas, once again it was a friend who reminded me of what I was really looking for. So, assuming that the anonymous state employee had found the word ‘weed’ offensive, I applied for WDHOPPR. One week later I received, once again, a letter of denial. I then took the letter, and a copy of the obituary, back to the person I had dealt with at the local office. She was finally able to find someone with a brain at the state level, and the second version of the vanity plate was approved.

SIUYPCA Vanity PlateThe whole ordeal pissed me off so much that I vowed to apply for one of my truly offensive ideas when the opportunity presented itself. A few months later, I purchased another El Camino, and applied for the plate SIUYPCA. One week later I had my new plate, no questions asked, and that was the beginning of SIUYPCA.com.
